AUSTRALIA DAY: This year’s Australia Day Award winners slicing the cake (from left) Adam Ryan, Cherie Gaskin, Vicki Mason, Conner Fenwick and Michelle Casserly. The phrase “never was so much owed by so many to so few” in Winston Churchill’s famous war time speech during World War II, might not seem applicable when we talk about Australia Day celebrations.
However, when compared with town administrator Bill Boehm’s observations regarding ordinary people in our community accomplishing and achieving extraordinary thing – there is a correlation.
It is usually the efforts of the few outstanding citizens that have made a difference to the community and way of life here in Roxby Downs that deserve to be acknowledged at the Australia Day Citizen Awards 2015.
In a letter to community businesses and organisations Mr Boehm said “these people have made outstanding contributions to our community by demonstrating a willingness to give of their time, talents and energy to ensure that Roxby Downs continues to thrive and remain the great place that we can all be proud of.”
Mr Boehm said as part of Australia Day celebrations, councils across Australia use this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the efforts of outstanding citizens.
Nomination forms are now available at the Roxby Downs Council or online in the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year categories.
Roxby Downs Community Board chairperson Michelle Davis is encouraging citizens to identify people within our sporting community who, over the past twelve months, are considered worthy of recognition.
“The board believes that each year wonderful sporting and sports administrative achievements are undertaken by ordinary people within our community, extending themselves with personal effort or by providing outstanding sporting administrative support to allow others to achieve their sporting potential,” she said.
“Those nominated do not necessarily have to be outstanding athletes.
“Outstanding team players or sporting administrators are equally worthy.”
Categories in the 2015 Roxby Downs Sports Person of the Year Awards, are Senior Sports Person, Young Sports Person and Team of the Year.
