It was heartening to see the large turnout for the Special Meeting of the Clare and Gilbert Valley Council at Clare Town Hall on Monday, December 15.
Members of the public acted with considerable restraint given their anger and frustration with council and their project ‘The Clare Valley Discovery Centre’.
Many spoke to their recently called for written submissions. the consensus being…this project has been a spectacular and expensive failure.
at no point have the powers that be on council apologised for the resulting damage.
Speaker after speaker addresses the measurable fall in tourist revenues and the serious damage done to ‘Brand Clare’.
Representatives of the ‘Clare Valley Hutt Project’ outlined their plans for a rejuvenated Visitor Information Centre. Their idea to bring together many and varied food, wine and arts groups can only complement a re-imagined and easily accessible tourist information service. Bravo! I urge all stakeholders to support their vision.
The council can help by accelerating these plans. In a time of weakening domestic economy, the luxury of time is something the Valley can ill afford.
I am hopeful that Clare Library can recover and again concentrate on core functions.
I am also hopeful that the spectacular table (a gift on the 50th anniversary of the Clare Institute) will be returned. Quite a cheek to remove it in a 150th anniversary year!
