NERVES gave way to relief on Wednesday morning for two Merewether teenagers among the thousands checking their HSC results.
Olivia Carroll, 17, and Joel Webber, 18, both awoke to find the results of their HSC studies waiting for them.
But checking those results proved a little bit tougher for Ms Carroll despite a desire to quickly calm her nerves.
‘‘I lost my PIN so I had to call the Board of Studies,’’ she said.
‘‘It was very tense.’’Planning to launch into a biomedical science degree, 17-year-old Olivia Carroll said she was happy with her results.
But while she was pleased with the ‘‘huge relief’’ of officially finishing the HSC, she was frustrated with her results in two subjects where she was only a mark shy of a higher band.‘‘It is frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it now,’’ she said.
Heading to share results with her friends, she said they were pleased with their achievements as well.
‘‘We are not asking each other what we got, just whether we’re happy, ’’she said.Mr Webber, 18, said he
started the day like any other despite the monumental news awaiting him.
After putting in the work all year, he was confident he would get the mark to enter his chosen course.
‘‘I wasn’t too worried coming up to today because I want to do communications at Newcastle uni next year,’’ Mr Webber said.
‘‘I’m tossing up at the moment, I’m looking at a few different things like journalism and media production because that’s what interests me.’’
The St Francis Xavier student tackled four units of English, two units of religion, legal studies and biology for his final year.
He said he hoped to defer his studies to work and travel.
Winning marks of more than 80 per cent in every subject but one, he said he was pleasantly surprised with his marks as he adjusted to the end of his schooling.
‘‘It’s good to sort of have a bit of a final end,’’ Mr Webber said.
‘‘We had our formal and that felt like the end but now it feels like it’s really wrapping up.’’
