STREET fights between youth in Ceduna are being filmed and shared on social media.
Staff at the Ceduna Youth Hub have viewed and reported numerous street fights between youth that are being recorded on smartphones, then uploaded to social media.
Ceduna Youth Hub coordinator Peter Jericho said many fights had even been set up with the sole intent to record them to be shared online.
“I have been shown some footage first hand and you can see a number of young people recording the fight and hear them encouraging the fight(s) to continue, rather than trying to break it up,” Mr Jericho said.
“It’s disturbing that these fights, which are quite violent, are being viewed as entertainment,” he said.
The Ceduna Youth Hub has a policy that requires any footage which staff are made aware of to be reported to police, in particular for fights that involve children under the age of 18, as it can become a child protection concern.
“It won’t be long before someone is hospitalised or worse,” Mr Jericho said.
Mr Jericho said the Youth Hub promoted a safe and violence- free space at all times and this type of behaviour in our community would not be tolerated.
SAPOL has been advised of numerous incidents and is encouraging people to call police immediately if they see it occurring.
Officer in Charge Matthew Steinbeck said SAPOL was involved in an active investigation.
“These incidents are being followed up and investigated,” Mr Steinbeck said.
“The public need to be aware that you do not have to be directly involved in the assault to be charged,” he said.
“Any party involved can become an accessory to assault in these circumstances.”
The Ceduna Youth Hub is urging young people and families to be cautious about how smartphones are being used.
It encourages parents and families to be aware of how their children are using their smartphones and social media, as well as monitor their own behaviour.
“We can take a stance on this at the Youth Hub but the education must start at home,” Mr Jericho said.
