Year’s best: Lance Rousell Memorial Trophy and Player of the Year winners – 2012 Phil Saville, 2014 Steve Latham and 2013 Peter Ostler.

Winning mix: Bowlers Adolf Giacovani and Judy Coombes – 2014 mixed pairs champions.

THE Wauchope Men’s Bowling Club celebrated the year’s activities with a presentation day on Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 60 bowlers, partners and family members attended to see our club champions and runners-up collect their trophies.

Our club champions for 2014 are major singles – John Borg; pairs – Peter Laurie and Ron Sharman; triples – Peter Ostler, Leighton McLaughlan and Steve Latham; fours – Paul Styles, Dave Styles, Ron Ross and Ken Ansley; minor singles – Paul “Smiley” Ireland; “C” grade singles – Bill Reid; mixed pairs – Judy Coombes and Adolf Giacovani.

The Lance Rousell Player of the Year Memorial Trophy was very closely contested again this year, with the winner, by just three points, Steve Latham. Congratulations Steve on winning this much revered club trophy, which was presented to him by Lyn Rousell.

On a lighter note, in recognition of his very entertaining weekly articles in the Wauchope Gazette, during which he usually manages to take a swipe at somebody, Peter McLeod (aka Crakajak) was presented with the Stirrer of the Year Award.

On Wednesday afternoon, December 10, 22 players had their names down to play in our single entry club select triples, resulting in three rinks of triples and a game of pairs. No surprise really that the winners on +13 were Archie McDonald, Earl Debreceny (who by now must have a second freezer for all the meat trays he wins at bowls) and Ted Scott (who needs three rinks to play on because his bowls are so old and take so much grass!). Runners-up were Keith Clayworth and Peter McLeod on +10.

Another great turnout for Wednesday twilight bowls, with 40 starters. Winners on the night were the team of Tom Cooper, Bill Armitage and Phil Saville. Runners-up were Bill Reid, “Yowie” aka Bryan Donkin and Paul “Taffy” Thomas. As usual, Bill and Yowie played their own game as they had no hope of understanding what their Welsh speaking skip wanted them to do!

Unfortunately, Friday afternoon’s weekly nominated pairs was washed out.

On Saturday afternoon a single entry men’s jackpot pairs game was scheduled but had to be cancelled as the minimum number of 20 starters was not reached. However all was not lost as a number of women bowlers were overheard the previous night complaining about the recent lack of play due to the wet weather. Being the season of goodwill to all men (and women), an SOS went out and we very quickly had 24 mixed starters for a 25-end game of single entry three bowl pairs, with skips having a blind pick for leads. Meat tray winners were Brian Thomas and Ron Ross on +12 and the runners-up were Bill Brooker and Lyn Reid on +6. Thanks, ladies, for joining us at such short notice.

This week on the bowls agenda we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs, names by 12 noon and games starting at 1pm, single entries accepted. On Wednesday afternoon we have our single entry club select triples, names by 12 noon and games starting at 1pm. Wednesday evening will be the last Wednesday twilight bowls for the year with play to kick off around 5.45pm so names by 5pm would be appreciated.

On Saturday, December 20, starting at 8.30am, we will be holding our inaugural Xmas Ham Day two bowl triples tournament, limited to 28 teams, sponsored by Jax Tyres Port Macquarie and Stokes Butchery and Minimart. On offer is three games of 15 ends, roast lunch, prizes for the first six best performed teams plus best card for each of the three games (one prize per team), plus Bradmans plus ham raffle to follow. There are still three spots left and this event is open to bowlers from other clubs. Dress is club uniform, creams or attire with BA logo.

A reminder that on Sunday we also have our monthly jackpot triples starting at 9.00am, with this month’s jackpot $400!

Visitors are always most welcome to register for any of these events by entering names on the available sheet on the bench adjacent to the notice board, or by phoning the club.

Bowlers also please note that the 2015 club fours championship is now open for nominations. See the notice board for details.
